The night falls with finality
Curtailing all activity
Until nature’s lightning show begins.
A breeze blows past the headlands
Whispers through the sand dunes
I’m feeling unsettled, like the rain.
Walking to the water’s edge
Stars shine bright between the clouds
A freight-train roar of surf is suddenly heard.
Electric discharges of light
Plunging back to darkest night
The phosphorescent glitter of the waves.
From this wild and lonely place
I watch the fitful flashes
Until they move too far out to sea.
And high above a jumbo jet
Between the clouds of blue and black
Is on the long haul to some distant shore.
Stars fall down to the planet’s edge
And once again I’m with you
Wild music fills the night
Once again I hear your voice.
Somewhere in this universe
The rhythm of a heartbeat
Calling all her wayward children home.
