Chingon is a Mexican rock band based in Austin, Texas whose sound is heavily influenced by mariachi, ranchera, and Texan rock 'n roll music. Chingon was formed by director Robert Rodr?guez to record songs for his 2003 film Once Upon a Time in Mexico. They contributed on Mexico and Mariachis, a compilation album to Rodr?guez' "Mariachi Trilogy", and released their debut album, Mexican Spaghetti Western, in 2004.
Chingon also contributed the song "Malague?a Salerosa" to Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 2 ? which Rodr?guez scored ? and a live performance by the band was included on the film's DVD release. They also contributed to the soundtrack for his next film, the collaboration with Quentin Tarantino called Grindhouse, doing a cover of the film's opening theme, re-titling it "Cherry's Dance of Death." Rodr?guez plays guitar in the band. The band has also made a appearance on an episode of George Lopez called "George Buys a Vow."
Other members of the band, who play without Robert Rodr?guez as the band Del Castillo:
Alex Ruiz - Vocals
Mark del Castillo - Guitar, Vocals
Rick del Castillo - Guitar, Vocals
Albert Besteiro - Bass
Carmelo Torres - Percussion
Mike Zeoli - Drums
Guest artists: Patricia Vonne (Rodr?guez's sister co-wrote and perfomed on "Severina"), Salma Hayek (performed "Siente Mi Amor"), Tito Larriva (wrote and performed "Alacran y Pistolero") and Nataly Pena.
The band's name comes from a Mexican slang term, ching?n, meaning "badass."
