As I Lay Dying was formed in 2001 in San Diego, California. Soon after their formation, the band signed with Pluto Records and released their first full length, ''Beneath the Encasing of Ashes'' in June of 2001. In 2002, the band recorded additional songs for a split CD with American Tragedy, also released on Pluto Records. After extensive touring and a marked increase in popularity, As I Lay Dying signed with Metal Blade Records in early 2003.
